What Is A Niche In Internet Marketing?

Having been in this internet marketing business for quite a while now I sometimes forget that there are certain terms that people don’t quite understand the way i do and it wasn’t until i was explaining to a friend what it was that i do that i realized not everyone knows what a niche is.
I took it for granted that because i know what it means, that everyone else would know too.

#1 money making recommendationso what is a niche in internet marketing

Put simply it’s a group, or for want of a better word, an audience and that audience are all looking online to either buy or find information about a particular subject.

Take for example someone who is looking for what headphones to wear while running, or how to lose weight, or how to gain weight, or learn how to run faster, or make money online, they are all niches.

In fact anything with an audience can be a niche. One of the most important things to remember is not to have too big a niche.

What i mean by that is you need to dig into the niche to find smaller niches within the main one. For example fitness is a massive niche, it can be split into many sub sections such as fitness for over 50s, fitness for kids, fitness for people with arthritis and so on, you get the idea.

the foundation

If you were thinking of building a house where would you start? The Roof? The Walls?

No, of course you wouldn’t, you would start with the foundations and that is how you should look at choosing your niche like.

It all starts with a niche and your business is built up on and around that chosen niche, just like your house is built on solid foundations.

So if you haven’t got a very good understanding of your chosen area and cannot communicate effectively about it then your business is going to start to subside and eventually fall down.

foundations
A lot of people who are just starting out in internet marketing tend to look, understandably, to how much money can made rather than look at the sustainability of the niche and the competition within that niche.

If you choose a niche that is too large then you run the risk of spreading yourself too thin, you need to stay focused and build up an authority in that field.[su_divider top=”no”]

making money with a niche

One of the most popular ways to promote products within a particular area and probably one of the biggest affiliate programs out there at the moment is Amazon.

Now just going back to what a niche is for a second, if you look at all the categories and sub-categories and sub-sub-categories of a particular subject like kitchen fixtures on Amazon for example you then begin to get an idea of how huge the possibilities actually are.

But it all starts with a niche and that can be virtually anything that there is an audience for.

You can build an entire business around baby clothes if that’s what interests you, absolutely.

It doesn’t stop with Amazon, a lot of companies have an affiliate program and that will just continue to grow as the companies realize that if they want to grow they will have to make use of affiliates to enable them to keep up with their own competitors.[su_divider top=”no”]#1

where to start

The main problem i see is not the lack of something to choose as a niche, but the overwhelming amount of choice available to someone who is new, how do you choose?

Well when you’re just starting out it would be better to try to choose something that you know about, something you have an interest in.

idea
Remember this, you are going to be writing content based around your niche so if you have some interest in it the more likely it is you will stick with it.

A lot of people think that just because you’ve got a website, chosen your niche and published a few articles you can sit back and watch the money roll in.

Oh i wish that was true, i really do, but the reality is that to outrank other websites in your particular area of choice you’re going to have to work harder than them.

If you don’t rank well, you don’t get clicks to your website. No clicks = no customers = no money.

So having even a slight interest makes it just that much easier.

Don’t think for second that a small niche can’t become a full time, it absolutely can. In fact the smaller the niche the more an expert within that niche you can become.

I know people that have some niches that even i wouldn’t think of, there’s plenty of room for everyone you just have to fulfill someones need.[su_divider top=”no”]

so what now

OK so now you know what a niche is and you’ve got a killer idea for your it, or you might need help to narrow it down to a manageable size, but you don’t know where to turn to for the help.

You don’t know the first thing about building a website or applying to affiliate programs, you just don’t know what to do next.

You need training.

Just like i needed training in the beginning, just like every other person who doesn’t know how to do something needs training.

  1. After reading this, I understand what niche is. However, I have a question how can I determine a niche’s potential? I want to go full time with a niche and continue working on it for years so I want to know the potential before.
Do you have a suggestion for me?

    • That’s a really good question, it all depends on a number of different factors so for me to give you a suggestion would be almost impossible, the number of potential niches out there are almost limitless. To begin with you have to start with your research into what sort of numbers there are in terms of searches per month to determine if it’s even going to be worth your while building out a site in that particular niche, you can check Google trends to see if it is sustainable and not at the end of it’s online life, you can check to see if there are the products available to promote? Has your chosen niche got affiliate programs? If you were looking to get into the Amazon Affiliate program then this handy little tool might be of some use to you. Check it out here

I hope i have given you some idea as to how you can determine your niche’s potential and if you have any other questions then just drop me a comment here.
