the story behind topcashback

TopCashback was the brainchild of two friends, Oliver Ragg and Mike Tomkins and in 2005 it was released in the UK with the mission to let people save money while doing their shopping.

The beginning was not an easy one for the fledgling company, like many new businesses, working a lot for very little return, however the pair were committed to passing on 100% of the cashback to the customer and so the only revenue they would be from adverts.

The company reached a milestone 1 million members in 2011 which also resulted in TopCashback being launched in America.

At the beginning of this year they reportedly had 6 million members.[divider]

the sign up

The sign up was very straightforward with just an email address and password neededtopcashback sign up

what i didn’t like was the fact you are automatically signed up for what they call their plus membership plus membershiphowever when i checked out the plus membership i decided to stay with this level given what you get for it even though it is going to cost.comparison table

time to start shopping!

The choice you have is vast. From games consoles to life insurance.

And the best part is you just shop as you normally would and TopCashback handles everything for you.

You click on an offer and you are directed to the merchants page through TopcashBack, don’t go directly to the merchants site yourself because you won’t get your cashback, it has to be through TopCashback to qualify.topcashback categories I choose to sign up for the National Lottery which has a £21 cashbacklottery tranfer

other ways to earn

One of the features i like is the tell-a-friend. You get paid £7.50 for each friend you introduce. tell a friend

There are some terms and conditions that you have to stick to like the fact that your friend must have a minimum £10 cashback themselves of payable status for you to be able to be paid the £7.50 referral fee.

Another way is the free cashback section where you have:

  • No purchase offers
  • Free trials
  • Free sim cards
  • Surveys
  • Competitions

All have there own levels of cashback but the free cashback description is a bit misleading because you still have to do something for the cashback, be it filling out a survey or actually buying an item.

If you prefer to actually go to a shop to do your shopping then Oncard is something you are going to want to do.

Oncard lets you collect cashback from your in-store purchases.

One problem i found was that from the 26 offers being presented i could only see Mastercard as a payment method, no visa. I don’t have a Mastercard and am not looking to get one either.

If you do have a Mastercard then you will need to first register your card with TopCashback then activate the particular offer you are interested in to be able to then go out to the shop and do your shopping.[divider]

snap and save

This feature was introduced in 2013, it’s an app for your smartphone and has been downloaded 500,000 times and works by allowing you to snap your till receipt by using the app. If any of your items are approved you earn cashback. Simple as that.

The items that are promoted are done so on a weekly basis with time periods in which to buy them. topcashback appUnfortunately all that was available was some wild rice and some baked beans! I’ll have to keep checking, but the idea is good.[divider]

stats[divider]

what sort of support is there?

I couldn’t find any phone numbers for getting support, but there is a great customer care program in place.topcashback customer care if you can’t find an answer to your question in the FAQs section then you will need to submit a support ticket.

Perhaps not the best way of dealing with questions, they could think about a live chat section where the community themselves as well as TopCashback representatives could answer questions almost immediately.[divider]

final thoughts

So we asked what is TopCashback about? is it a scam or legit?

It is most definitely a scam…. only joking….. it’s absolutely legit.

I have no reservations about recommending this to my friends and family and that’s not because of the £7.50 referral fee either.

I just think people who don’t know about this are missing out on an opportunity to save themselves some money just by doing the things they’d normally do.

  1. I have stopped using Topcashback and suggest that you do the same. Their customer service is appalling and their policies are abysmal. I made a purchase in MAY 2019 and in February 2020, I have only been given the run around as to why they will not credit me the $75 bonus for activating a mobile line through Xfinity Mobile. They claim that Xfinity Mobile has not paid them which is completely irrelevant to the end consumer as I have met all of their terms. Here is their latest email again 8 months later after telling me to wait and that these things take time. BUYER BEWARE!!!

As we mentioned previously, cashback is funded by the retailer. So if they haven’t yet validated your claim and passed us the cashback, we don’t yet have the cashback to pass to you.

We cannot escalate a claim internally on the basis that a retailer is delayed in responding to your claim, as this is out of our hands.

I understand it’s frustrating to be kept waiting, and we hate having to ask. As much as we’d love to simply pay this to you now, we do have to wait for the retailer to confirm eligibility and then pay the cashback.

We will continue to press Xfinity over your claim and we will be in touch as soon as we have an update.

  2. It seems like support tickets are becoming the more efficient way to answering people’s problems. It seems like it would be a great thing to sign up for if only there was a way for them to take VISA. DO they take Paypal or plan on accepting other major credit cards in the future? Thanks for the review!

    • Hi Liz,
The only time you need to register a credit card is for the ‘ONCARD’ feature of Topcashback, if you were going to actually go to a shop, but you can still enjoy all the money saving offers and you will get paid either through PayPal or BACS or ACH depending on which country you are in.
You raise a great question and i’m actually going to use their support ticket system to see if other credit cards are going to be used for their ‘ONCARD’ shopping.
I’ll let you know how i get on…..

        • Hey Liz,
The Support ticket system has got back to me, it did take 3 days though which is a bit slow really but they were able to answer my questions which is good.
First off the ONCARD feature does accept other major credit cards for registration such as Visa, maestro etc. it just so happens the offers available at the moment are only accepting Mastercard.
The other point is that the ONCARD feature is only available for use in the UK only.
So the support ticket system does work albeit rather slowly..

  3. Hi Sharon,
Thanks for your post about TopCashBack. It sounds like a good idea especially since it is free to join. Everyone will enjoy shopping if they are getting something in return.
It is interesting to know that there are legit programs out there that we can sign up for to make some extra cash.
I will have to check out this program and see how it is in the USA.
The referral program should help to boost your earnings.
    Do they use PayPal?
Thanks for taking the time to enlighten your readers and showing them ways in which they can make money.

    • Hi Luna,
I absolutely love Topcashback, it’s a great way to make a bit extra by not doing anything too much differently than you’d normally do.
I think it works exactly the same in the U.S if not it’ll be pretty similar.
They do indeed pay out payout via PayPal, but they also use ACH (Automated Clearing House) and Amazon gift cards or American Express Reward Card so you have a bit of choice in how you get paid which is always good.

  4. Hi Sharon,
Thank you for your article on Topcashback. To be honest before reading your article I had never heard of the before. That is very strange considering I’m always trying to find ways of making an income and saving money. There are so many scams out there and its always hard to know what’s legit. So glad this one isn’t cause it means I can add it to my list.

    • Hi Melanie,
Thanks for your comment, you are right there are many scams out there trying to catch people out, that is where Topcashback is different.
It is defo one to add to your list.

  5. I’ve seen TopCashback being advertised and also used a cashback site before. The sites are an awesome way to save money on buying the products you love. And when you receive a nice payout (depending on how much you spend) every so often, it makes you feel like you’ve won some money on the lotto lol.

I like the Plus membership option with TopCashback and especially the referral program for making a little extra on the side. If you refer 50 to 100 family/friends who use the site, that’s a nice bonus in your pockets. 😉

  6. Hi Sharon, Topcashback sounds like the sort of thing that would be of interest to me, I love to save money whenever I can. Just one question how do I get the actual cashback, is it through PayPal or do I have to register my bank details?

    • Hi Joe,

That’s good question, you can receive your payout in a number of different ways including bank transfer, PayPal or gift cards.
I’m sure you’ll save money with Topcashback should you decide to join.

  7. I need to get my wife on this! How much money have you earned with this app?

It seems similar to the ibotta app, I tried using it for a while but was just too lazy to take pictures of my receipts.

However, I feel like my wife would be good about this and earn some cash back.

    • Hi Jeremy, to date i’ve earned about £60, that includes money back from joining the Lottery and 13% cashback on NIKEiD. I’ve also earned a couple of referral fees for introducing my friends. I haven’t done any of the Snap & Save feature, perhaps a bit lazy too 🙂
I’m planning to make use of a broadband offer soon with up to £75 cashback. Whatever you choose to do I’m sure you will save some money and you and your wife will love this.

  8. Thanks for this review of TopCashback, you have covered how it works thoroughly and it is good to know that it is a legitimate service.
I like the idea of earning some income by doing what you would be doing anyway sounds like a great idea to me!
    I’m on board for sure!
    Cheers 🙂

    • Hi thanks for taking the time to read and you can rest assured it’s definitely legit. I think you’ve hit the nail on the head in that the appeal for most people is the fact that you can earn or save some money just doing everyday shopping or buying some bigger ticket items.

  9. TopCashback sounds like ShopBack that is popular in Asia where I am. They are basically an affiliated marketing website that promotes people to shop and they gain a commission for every item purchase through them. They then give a portion of the commission back to consumers in the form of cashback. I see it as a win-win situation for them and the consumers (more for them obviously as they will be earning several hundreds and thousands or even millions!) However they don’t really give proper guidance or recommendation of products, they just linked up with merchants such as Amazon and sell whatever is available. The website is not that useful if you are looking for some prior knowledge before buying a product. They are like the hypermart of the internet.

    Reply
    • Hey Leo, thanks for your insight. I think the 2 are a lot alike, although Topcashback passes on all the commission to the customer, they earn their revenue through sponsored adverts.
I agree with you that you won’t get any prior knowledge of a product from the site, but that’s not what Topcashback is about. It’s about helping their customers save on everyday things that you would normally buy.

    • Hi, Topcashback is currently available in USA, India, China, Japan and UK. I’m not sure what part of the world you are in so i can’t say if it’s available to you.
Hope that answers your question and thanks for dropping by.

  10. This sounds like it is definitely worth signing up for. But I am a little confused – do you have to pay to be a member, if so how much does it cost for normal membership and how much for plus membership?

Anyway I am going to head on over to their website to find out more – thanks for flagging this up.

    Reply
    • Hi Steve, no you don’t have to pay for membership….but you will get smaller benefits such as the cashback bonus and the friends referral bonus if you stay on the normal membership.
The Plus membership to which you are automatically enrolled to will cost you $5/£5 of your annual cashback earnings. Remember if you don’t want to be part of the Plus membership and just want to be a free member then you have to opt out in your account area. I must say that i’ve kept on the plus membership because of the benefits outweighing the cost.
Hope this clears things up and you save yourself a bit of money 🙂
I’d love to hear how you get on, good or bad.

  11. Sharon I cant say if this is legit or not, if I would be interested ,I don’t think so not until someone I truly trust guaranteed it with 100% proof. I think that would be something for a female . females love to purchase stuff on line more so than male. As I go along i’m starting to realize that all kinds of people are interested in trying to make money online some successful and some not so successful. I feel that if one is successful and sincerely want to share their online success than more power to them. You have to be as honest as you would want people to be towards you.

    • Hi Dwayne, You’d probably be surprised by the amount of males that use Topcashback. I don’t blame you for being skeptical, it’s not as if you know me, but anyone who does know me will vouch for me. I echo your sentiments exactly in regards to being honest, you have to be honest if you want people to be honest with you.
